The Celtic Cross Tarot spread is probably the most popular spread of them all. Widely used all over the world, the Celtic Cross offers a broad overview of most questions. However, this spread is best suited to questions or occasions that represent a turning point of some kind; cycles, birthdays, new year, change of house or job, end or beginning of new relationships or projects...
The spread gets its name because of its European origins and the fact that when the cards are laid out, they resemble a cross. Potentially, the first occurrence of this spread is actually from the book The Pictorial Key to the Tarot by Arthur Edward Waite, the creator of the Rider-Waite Tarot illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith, published in 1910. In his own words, Waite calls the Celtic Cross “a short process which has been used privately for many years past in England, Scotland, and Ireland.”
